No party identity, offenders to face action: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has ordered strict action against drug dealers, terrorists and extortionists, saying no party affiliation should be considered when dealing with criminals.

“The only identity of a criminal is that they are a criminal,” he said, while also directing field-level police officers to take legal action against juvenile offenders.

He made the remarks at a monthly crime review meeting at Police Headquarters on Tuesday (September 29), reviewing the country’s crime situation in August 2026.

The IGP said the police’s “zero tolerance” policy against drugs would continue and stressed greater public participation through community policing.

He also directed police to ensure security for the upcoming Durga Puja and take measures to prevent rumours and misinformation.

Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Md Sayedur Rahman called for intelligence gathering on juvenile gangs and identifying influential people behind them. He also directed police units to prepare security plans for Durga Puja and ensure proper use of body-worn cameras.

The meeting reviewed major crimes in August, including robbery, murder, rape, attacks on police and abduction, as well as progress in arrests, investigations, trials and conviction rates.
