Govt will not take electoral blame: Shahe Alam

The government will not accept any blame for irregularities in local government elections, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a law and order and development coordination meeting at the Rangpur Deputy Commissioner’s office, he said local government elections would be held from January as announced by the Election Commission. He said the government wanted to ensure free, fair and impartial elections.
Shahe Alam, who is responsible for coordinating development activities in Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram, said the government was working to develop Rangpur and would address the district’s problems in phases.
Responding to questions about the law and order situation, he said necessary directives would be issued from the meeting. If the situation did not improve by the next meeting, action would be taken against responsible officials.
He said Rangpur would receive development support as part of balanced development across the country. He said Tk 127 crore had already been allocated for six constituencies in Rangpur, while development project proposals worth around Tk 3,600 crore had been sent to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council.
He also said projects had been proposed in public health, education and other important sectors. Regarding the Teesta master plan, he said the government was working on the issue and was committed to taking effective steps soon.
Earlier in the day, Shahe Alam visited the grave of Shaheed Abu Sayed in Pirganj and met his family members. He announced Tk 1 crore for construction of a new house for Abu Sayed’s family, accommodation for his parents and beautification of the graveyard.
Later, he attended an event organised by the Rangpur District Council to honour SSC students who achieved GPA-5 and laid the foundation stone of Rangpur District Council School and College in Satgara.
