Child shot during gunfight between two groups

An eight-year-old girl was shot in the hand during a gunfight between two regional organisations in Machalong area of Sajek union in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari on Tuesday morning.

The injured child, Kachmita Tripura, a Class III student of Machalong Government Primary School, is the daughter of Alendra Tripura of Mandirchhara Para. A local doctor removed the bullet from her hand, and she is now out of danger.

Locals said gunfire broke out between the two groups in the area around 10:45am, causing panic among residents.

Karbarি Matendra Tripura said ordinary people were bearing the brunt of the conflict between the regional organisations. He said the situation had made it difficult for jum cultivator families to work in their fields or move around, while disruption to markets had also caused concerns over food supplies.

Sajek Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tofazzal Hossain said the child was hit by a bullet in her left hand during several rounds of gunfire between the two sides. She was taken to a local hospital, where doctors successfully removed the bullet.
