Chattogram’s Jungle Salimpur area will be brought under good governance and discipline by eliminating its reputation as a haven for criminal activities, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.

He said a police academy modelled after the Sardah Police Academy has been planned for the area. Besides, 72 acres of land have been acquired in Jungle Salimpur for relocating the Chattogram Central Jail.

The home minister made the remarks while briefing journalists after a meeting on improving the overall law and order situation in Jungle Salimpur at the Secretariat around 3:00 PM on Thursday.

Salahuddin said, "government, hill-class and khas land in Jungle Salimpur would be brought under proper management. Space has also been allocated for different law enforcement agencies to ensure their permanent presence in the area."

He said, representatives from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), the divisional commissioner and deputy commissioner of Chattogram, and senior officials of law enforcement agencies attended the inter-ministerial meeting.

Representatives of the police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Coast Guard and SRB also took part in the meeting, he added.

The minister said, "the meeting also reviewed progress on the ongoing road network construction in Jungle Salimpur. The road construction work is being carried out under the coordination of the Armed Forces Division and led by the Engineering Construction Battalion (ECB)."

"Government land in several mouzas of Jungle Salimpur would be brought under integrated management. A decision has been taken to establish a police academy in the area following the model of the Sardah Police Academy, and the process of selecting land for it is underway". he added.

Salahuddin said, 72 acres of land had been acquired beside the Bayezid Link Road to relocate Chattogram Central Jail to the area.

He also said decisions would be taken on rehabilitating people who have illegally settled in different parts of Jungle Salimpur. Measures would also be taken regarding the operation of educational institutions and other establishments in the area.

“Everything will be brought under good governance. The area, which had become a haven for criminal activities, will be freed from that situation and brought under discipline,” the minister said.

He added that space had been allocated for the police, BGB, SRB and APBn to ensure their presence in Jungle Salimpur. The respective forces will construct facilities there to ensure good governance and law and order.

The minister said development, government land management, rehabilitation, operation of institutions and law-and-order measures in Jungle Salimpur would be implemented in a coordinated manner.
