NARAYANGANJ, Mar 28: Fields in Narayanganj's Bandar Upazila are awash in the bright yellow of mustard flowers, with the buzzing of bees adding life to the farmland. Villages including Amair and nearby areas in Dhamgar Union are now covered in a carpet of green and yellow, delighting farmers who see in these blossoms the promise of a fruitful harvest.
Locals report that in the months of Poush and Magh, mustard fields are a vivid sea of yellow. Encouraged by last year's good market prices for high-quality mustard seeds, farmers have increased their cultivation this season. Minimal input costs and higher profits are motivating more farmers to plant mustard. Over the past few years, mustard cultivation has expanded across Narayanganj, and this year about 4,500 hectares across five upazilas are under mustard.
The rising plants and blooming flowers have brought smiles to farmers' faces, who now dream of a bumper yield. Many farmers noted that favourable weather and timely application of improved seeds and fertilizers have contributed to strong growth this year.
Hedayetul Islam, Deputy Agriculture Officer of Bandar Upazila, said, "We supplied seeds and fertilisers on time, and with favourable weather, we expect a bumper crop. Some leaf scorching and stem rot may occur due to cold waves, but we advise fungicide treatment to manage these."
Deputy Agriculture Officer Kamruzzaman Government added, "High-yielding mustard varieties generally have lower uric acid content. Compared to last year, the weather has been much better. Farmers can expect good profits along with abundant harvest this season."
With mustard fields in full bloom, farmers of Bandar Upazila are hopeful that the golden waves will translate into both plentiful harvests and economic gains.
