A sixth-grader was raped inside her school's classroom at Kushtia's Mirpur upazila reportedly by an elderly office assistant.

The accused, Hamidul Islam, 52, was arrested later on Saturday.

According to the victim’s family, the student had gone to school at around 9:00 AM on Thursday to attend recent years SSC candidates' farewell programme and didn't return home. Having no sight of her till later afternoon, the family members started looking for her and reached the school gate.

To inquire about their lost child, the family members sought the accused office assistant's help to have access the school's classrooms. The accused denied them to enter into the school, instead he misbehaved.

However, the victim's family members got access at last after the school's headmaster intervened at around 8PM on night. Their search drive unveiled a tragic scenario of the child. They found her unconscious at a classroom's floor while they discovered an abandon sandal and school bag in another floor, which unleash her struggle to survive.

The girl was eventually rescued and first taken to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex from where she was shifted to Kushtia General Hospital for better treatment.

Kushtia General Hospital Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Hossain Imam confirmed that medical tests found evidence of rape adding that the victim is now out of danger.

Confirming the incident, Mirpur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Shahidul Islam said the victim's mother filed a case on Friday night.

The arrested have been produced before the court and police will seek remand for further interrogation, added the OC.
