Woman gang-raped confining husband, 4 arrested

Four individuals were arrested in connection with the gang-rape of a 21-year-old woman after confining her husband at Chandina upazila of Cumilla district on Monday.

The victim was reportedly abducted and molested throughout the whole night after being separated from her husband.

The detainees have been identified as Mehedi Hasan Tareq, 24, Arif, 32, Ismail, 35 and Ashiq, 31, all residents of Madarpur.

According to police sources, the incident occurred on Sunday night while the couple was traveling from Barura to a relative’s house in Chandina by an auto-rickshaw. Around 10:00 PM, three men on a motorcycle intercepted their way at a secluded spot on the Kamarkhola-Ewajband road. The suspects reportedly harassed the couple and called two more accomplices to the scene.

The group then forcibly detained the husband and took the woman to a nearby maize field, where they took turns raping her. 

After the suspects released the husband in the dark, he immediately contacted the national emergency service (999).

Upon receiving the call, Chandina police rushed to the scene when the accused fled sensing the police presence. 

Police rescued the woman and took her to a nearby hospital. 

Subsequent drives in the Kamarkhola area led to the capture of four suspects.

Chandina Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mizaur Rahman, confirmed that five individuals were involved in the crime, police have apprehended four of them and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspect. 

A case has been filed by the victim and the arrested individuals are being processed for court, the official added.
