SONARGAON, NARAYANGANJ, July 9:  Around 20,000 tree saplings were distributed among school students in Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj as part of the "One Student, One Tree" campaign under  Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's announced programme to plant 250 million trees over the next five years.

The distribution programme was held at Sonargaon Stadium at around 11 am on Monday, where students from different educational institutions across the upazila received the saplings.

The event was chaired by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Raihan Kabir, while lawmaker Azharul Islam Mannan, MP for Narayanganj-3, attended it as the chief guest.

Addressing the programme, Mannan said the initiative aims to protect the environment, tackle climate change, and build a greener Bangladesh.

"Keeping in view the prime minister's initiative to plant 250 million trees across the country over the next five years, we have undertaken a programme to plant 200,000 trees in Sonargaon Upazila," he said.

He urged students to plant the saplings carefully at their homes.

"These trees will one day provide us with oxygen, save lives, and help protect our beloved motherland from natural disasters," he added.

Mannan also said the people of Sonargaon would continue working together to implement every environmental protection initiative undertaken by the prime minister alongside the country's development efforts.

"Maintaining ecological balance is our moral responsibility if we want to build a healthy and beautiful future generation," he said.

On the same day, the MP also inaugurated the construction of a new road in the Meghna Industrial City area and laid the foundation stone for the development of the historic Baidyerbazar Ghat.

He expressed hope that the improvement of local road connectivity and the modernisation of the commercially important river terminal would have a positive impact on the local economy and public life.

Among those present as special guests were Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munshi, Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer Asif Al Jinat, Officer-in-Charge of Sonargaon Police Station Golam Sarowar, Upazila Education Officer Shafiqul Islam, and Upazila Engineer Alamgir Chowdhury.
