171 Bangladeshi nationals returned home on Thursday. They were detained at Libya’s Ganfouda detention center.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), they were accused of travelling to Libya to illegally cross over to Europe via sea. A special charter flight of Buraq Air carrying the returnees landed at Dhaka airport at around 6:30 AM,
With this latest group, a total of 1,894 Bangladeshi nationals have been repatriated from different detention centers in Libya so far.
The repatriation was made possible through the joint efforts of the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, the Libyan government, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
MoFa stated, most of these individuals entered Libya with the help of human traffickers. They wanted to make the perilous journey across the Mediterranean sea. Many of them reported abduction and torture while staying in Libya.
The IOM provided the repatriated Bangladeshis with pocket money, food, basic medical treatment, and temporary accommodation where needed.
The foreign ministry has urged the returnees to share their harrowing experiences with their communities to raise public awareness against illegal migration.
