One missing after tourist boat capsizes in Sangu river, six rescued

Six people were rescued alive after a tourist boat carrying seven passengers capsized in the Sangu River in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban, while one tourist remains missing, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said on Saturday.

According to Lt Col Md Yasir Arafat Hossain, commanding officer of the 38 BGB (Bolipara Battalion), the boat sank around 5:21pm on Friday in the Baropathar area due to the strong current. The accident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Tendumukh BGB Camp under the Bolipara Battalion.

A BGB patrol team travelling from Remakri to Thanchi immediately launched a rescue operation and brought six people to safety, including four tourists, the boatman and the tourist guide.

The missing tourist has been identified as Md Jawad Ul Islam Mahian, 24, a resident of Maskanda in Mymensingh.

BGB said four special patrol teams are continuing the search operation in the Sangu River. Local representatives, the boatman, the tourist guide and local residents are also assisting in the rescue efforts.

To strengthen the operation, BGB has coordinated with the Thanchi Fire Service. However, as the local fire service unit has no divers, an expert diving team from Chattogram has been dispatched to the scene to conduct an underwater search upon arrival.

BGB said the rescue operation is continuing with the highest priority to locate the missing tourist.
