Sonargaon holds awareness rally, meeting to prevent dengue

A colourful rally and an awareness meeting were held in Sonargaon of Narayanganj on Saturday to raise public awareness about dengue prevention.

Organised by the Sonargaon upazila administration, the rally began from the upazila parishad council premises in the morning and marched through the area's main roads before returning to the venue, where an awareness meeting was held.

The programme was chaired by Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asif Al Jinnat.

Among those present were Officer-in-Charge of Sonargaon Police Station Golam Sarowar, Sonargaon Upazila BNP General Secretary Mosharraf Hossain, Joint Secretary Ataur Rahman, Senior Joint Secretary of Sonargaon Municipality BNP Sadikur Rahman Sentu, Upazila BNP Publicity Secretary Md Selim Hossain Dipu, Convener of the municipal Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal Faruk Ahmed, along with officials from various government departments, local public representatives, teachers, students, representatives of social and cultural organisations, and members of civil society.

Participants carried festoons and placards carrying messages on dengue prevention. They urged residents to keep their homes and surrounding areas clean, remove stagnant water and use mosquito nets regularly.

Speaking at the programme, UNO Asif Al Jinnat said dengue has become a major public health challenge and stressed that regular cleanliness drives are being carried out as part of the government's efforts to combat the disease.

"If you keep your surroundings clean, you are protecting not only your own family but also your neighbours. These small acts of awareness can help build a cleaner, healthier and more modern Sonargaon," he said.

He also called on residents to turn awareness into everyday practice and work collectively alongside government initiatives to build a dengue-free and safe Sonargaon.

Speakers at the meeting said dengue could not be eliminated through government efforts alone, emphasising that active public participation and greater awareness were essential. They urged everyone to keep their homes and surroundings clean to protect their families and communities from the spread of dengue.
