Eight people acquitted in the Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case were released from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail and Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail in Gazipur on Tuesday.
They were released in phases from around 12:45 PM after jail authorities verified their bail documents, jail authorities said.
Kashimpur High Security Central Jail Superintendent Md Zakir Hossain confirmed the release.
The released prisoners are Md Shamim, Hafiz Abdul Quader, Mahiuddin Shakil, Afsar Uddin, Imran Hossain Mamun, Iftekhar Uddin Rana, Abdur Rahim Sharif and Kamrunnahar Moni.
Kamrunnahar’s seven-year-old daughter, Mobashwera Khanam Rathi, also left the jail with her mother.
Relatives of the released prisoners had been waiting at the main gate of Kashimpur Central Jail since morning. The released people became emotional after meeting their relatives and later left for Feni with family members and well-wishers, according to their families.
In the Nusrat murder case, the High Court acquitted 10 of the 16 convicts sentenced to death and commuted the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment. The death sentences of two others, Siraj Ud Daula and Shahadat Hossain Shamim, were upheld.
