Mia Golam Porwar: “The Government Is Moving Toward Fascism; We Are Trying to Turn Them Back”

Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar has said that the government is moving toward fascism and that they are trying to steer it away from that path.

He made the remarks during an interaction with journalists on Friday (August 28), following a conference of party unit presidents in Chauddagram, Cumilla.

Among those present were Cumilla South District Jamaat Ameer Advocate Muhammad Shahjahan, Chauddagram Upazila Jamaat Ameer Mahfuzur Rahman, Secretary Belal Hossain, Dhaka Metropolitan Jamaat Working Council member VP Sahab Uddin, Municipality Jamaat Ameer Maulana Ibrahim, Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Opel, and leaders from various levels of the organization.

Professor Mia Golam Porwar said, "Jamaat, along with the BNP and several other political parties, had signed the July Charter with the aim of implementing it. The charter stipulated that the elected government would implement it within 180 days."

“But after coming to power, the government is moving away from implementing the July Charter. They are now trying to deny the July Charter. The 180-day period will expire in September. We hope the government will convene a session to implement the July Charter and carry it out. Otherwise, we will decide to launch a movement with the people of the country to implement the charter,” he said.

He alleged that the government is politicizing every sector. “Political favoritism is being practiced in city corporations, municipalities, district councils, and all development activities. This is unconstitutional. If there were no partisan government in the country today, appointing administrators might have been legitimate. But now there is an elected partisan government, and they cannot do this. If the government holds local government elections and gives people the opportunity to elect their representatives, public suffering will decrease.”

Referring indirectly to the Home Minister, the Jamaat secretary general said, “There is a minister in this country who speaks about every issue and every ministry. He makes statements belittling the opposition party in parliament. Yet he does not seem to be paying attention to the deterioration of law and order under his own ministry.”

Addressing the government, Mia Golam Porwar said, “We cannot see any visible development. Everywhere, we are only seeing clashes among people affiliated with the ruling party. There is discrimination in development across the country. Equitable allocations are not being provided to constituencies represented by opposition MPs.”

Expressing his dissatisfaction, he said, “It is normal for an elected MP to carry out development work, inaugurate projects, and lay foundation stones in their own constituency. But the government has assigned reserved women MPs to oversee development activities in areas represented by opposition MPs, effectively treating them like gatekeepers. This is inappropriate. It further undermines opposition MPs.”
