Woman injured in alleged attack by brother-in-law

A woman was allegedly beaten and seriously injured by her brother-in-law over a dispute regarding a financial transaction in Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 2:00 PM in the Pahariakhali area of Ward No. 2 under Barbakia Union of the upazila.
The injured woman was identified as Hadisa Begum, also known as Haisa, 42. She is the wife of Ali Hossain, a migrant worker in Oman, from Pahariakhali.
Her relatives rescued her after the incident and admitted her to Pekua Upazila Health Complex.
The accused, Ahmad Chhobi, is a resident of the same area. They are related as brother-in-law and sister-in-law.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, Ahmad Chhobi and Hadisa Begum have been involved in a dispute over a financial transaction. The matter had also reached the police station.
On Tuesday afternoon, Ahmad Chhobi allegedly entered Hadisa Begum’s house and assaulted her.
Hadisa Begum said she had a financial transaction with her brother-in-law Ahmad Chhobi related to a visa.
A local arbitration meeting had fixed a deadline for repayment. It was decided that the money would be paid towards the end of every month.
Accordingly, she paid Tk 50,000 around 20 days ago, she said.
She said one of her daughters got married a week ago. She had borrowed money to arrange the wedding, and some payments were still outstanding.
“I told Ahmad Chhobi that I would pay him after a few days,” she said.
Later, the husband of a distant relative lent her Tk 2.50 lakh, she said. She was counting the money in the kitchen on Tuesday.
Hadisa alleged that Ahmad Chhobi and his wife Reshmi came there and started pulling at the bundle of money.
At one point, the couple allegedly kicked, punched and hit her with a stick, leaving her injured. They also allegedly took away the money.
Abchar, a tomtom driver and an eyewitness, said he heard a woman crying from the house.
“I went there and saw a man beating the woman indiscriminately. Later, I helped rescue her and arranged to take her to the hospital,” he said.
Habiba Akter, Hadisa’s younger sister, said she went to the scene after hearing that her sister had been assaulted.
“We rescued her and took her to the hospital. She sustained injuries all over her body,” she said.
Pekua Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mehedi Hasan said legal action would be taken after investigation if a written complaint is received.
