The body of an elderly woman, who had been missing for five days, was recovered from the Mathabhanga River along the border area in Kushtia’s Daulatpur upazila on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Malejan Nesa, 66, wife of late Elahi Box, a resident of Pragpur union in the upazila.
According to locals, they spotted the body floating in the Bangladesh part of the Mathabhanga River near Bilgatuya village, close to the Indian border, around 11:00 AM and informed the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Being informed, Kushtia BGB-47 officials rushed to the spot. With the assistance of locals and relatives, the body was recovered and later identified as Malejan Nesa.
Daulatpur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Arifur Rahman said the woman had gone missing about five days earlier, and announcements were made in the area while relatives searched for her in different places.
A case has been filed with the police station in this regard, added the OC.
Local enquiries revealed that the woman had been suffering from mental instability for a long time and often wandered away from home. Family members suspect that she may have accidentally fallen into the river and drowned sometime between March 8 and March 12.
